Kit Lauer Memorial Scholarship
Kit Lauer was a husband, father, coach, teacher and leader – an example for us all to follow. Beginning in the classroom and gymnasium, Kit grew to become a leader in the community and a pastor at Hope Chapel in Kihei. Thousands of people were touched through his teaching, coaching and community involvement. In high school, Kit competed in track, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics, and public speaking. He was a collegiate champion wrestler and continued his studies as a life long learner, receiving his PhD in Philosophy. In the spring of 2008 Kit was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. While undergoing multiple chemotherapy treatments he kept a blog written to encourage his friends and family entitled ‘The Journey.’ After all three of the treatments failed to put his cancer into remission, he spent the last six months of his life teaching. Kit Lauer finished his race on earth incredibly strong on April 24th, 2009.
Many of us at Vertical Sports Maui were positively impacted through the ministry of Kit Lauer. We believe that a fitting way to honor his commitment to youth and education is to offer the Kit Lauer Memorial Scholarship. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide Maui youth with assistance with their college tuition. It is our goal to instill the importance of character development that will bring them success for a lifetime.
